CARACAS, March 8, 2011 (AFP) - The Venezuelan delegation to the United Nations Organization (UNO) in Vienna reaffirmed the "strong support" of his government for the establishment of a Palestinian state "with internationally recognized borders," according to a press release from the Foreign Ministry released Tuesday.
"Venezuela reaffirms the strong support of the Palestinian cause, the right to self-determination of this people which should be realized without further delay in establishing a state with internationally recognized borders," said Ali Uzcategui, Permanent Representative of Venezuela to the UN in Vienna, quoted in the text.
Uzcátegui, participating since Monday in a meeting analyze the situation in Palestine, said "our country's absolute rejection to the Israeli policy aimed at fragmentation of Palestinian territory."
Venezuela "requires Israel, withdraw without further delay, of the occupied Arab territories and stop the ongoing violations of international humanitarian law," continues the note.
On a visit to Caracas in November 2009, Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas received the support of Venezuela for the creation of a Palestinian state and since then both governments have been developing an active agenda that included the signing of political and trade agreements.
Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez is a staunch defender of the Palestinian cause. In January 2009, during the Israeli offensive against Gaza, broke diplomatic relations with Israel. Four months later, he opened a Palestinian representative in Caracas.
Venezuela is also a member of the United Nations Committee on the Exercise of the Inalienable Rights of Palestinian People "from September 2010 .
