VENEZUELA and Colombia share the Secretary General of the Union of South American Nations (UNASUR) in the next two years.
Former Colombian Foreign Minister Maria Emma Mejia is the new secretary general for the period 2011-2012, while former Venezuelan Foreign Minister Ali Rodriguez will take over the period 2012-2013.
Mejia, who will take office in April, welcomed his appointment and highlighted the importance of happen to the emblematic Nestor Kirchner.
Upon designation, the former Minister Mejia met with President Juan Manuel Santos, in the Casa de Nariño (see box).
The decision came from Ecuador, where they built the new headquarters of UNASUR, which will be called Nestor Kirchner, after the last secretary of state, died on 27 October.

"The institutionalization of UNASUR will enable us to have an organization that holds that seeks to coordinate a comprehensive response to the crisis of the XXI century," stressed the president Ecuador, whose country held the rotating presidency of UNASUR until last November to transfer it to Guyana.
The ministers also attended the laying of the foundation stone of the headquarters.
