The Raoni Brazilian Indian chief and director of the movie 'Avatar', Canadian James Cameron, protested Friday against the construction of giant hydroelectric Belo Monte, in the heart of the Amazon, destined to become the third largest in the world.
"The fish migrate from the river, our people suffer, but the only ones with access to the ears of the government are making money from the project," protested the chief Raoni, stoic with his tiara yellow feathers on the head and a piece of wood inserted into the lower lip, and years ago who accompanied the singer Sting in his defense of the Amazon.
Accompanied by his friend and former actor California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, Cameron went for the chief to his village in the Xingu River in Para state, where the dam will be built.
Schwarzenegger, Cameron and Raoni part of a global business forum on environmental and social sustainability that is home to the cream of Brazilian companies and some global in Manaus, the great capital of Amazonas in the north Brazil. Schwarzenegger also defended the country's green energy.
Along the chief at a press conference, Cameron denounced a "humanitarian crisis and a human rights issue" to the Belo Monte project, a pharaonic construction cost of $ 11,000 million.
"Brazil is growing fast, of course you will need energy. But now you have the opportunity to switch to energy-solution-serve for the next 100 years as other countries will have to, "said Cameron.
The director announced on Sunday that sent Brazil to the actors of the films being prepared as a continuation of Avatar to be inspired by the Amazon and learn from the Indians. Conclude these two films will take five years, in which he said will continue to travel to Brazil as a result.
After finishing Avatar, which refers to residents of a fictitious jungle, Cameron visited last year the Indians of the Xingu and joined their cause against the hydroelectric project. Former President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva "betrayed its mandate by adopting hydro, so I'm full of rage," said Raoni.
