Duration: 4 hours 45 minutes moving
Minimum height: 429 meters
height: 1125 meters
Difficulty: Regarding the technical difficulty, this route is very easy to follow except the piece of higher Peñacalva that is not marked. But the rest of the route is to follow all the way the PR-225 that is clean and well signposted. Regarding the physical difficulty of catalogaría moderate and we will lose a lot of height to go down to the river bed (as shown in the graph of altitude) and then climb back up to Cullen.

Starting Point: This beautiful village Castellón Maestrazgo is nearly 1100 meters height. Its history goes back to the era of the Iberians who built the original castle. But the history of man in these lands goes back to prehistoric times as evidenced by the numerous archaeological remains and cave paintings found in this area. Until the middle ages historical data are lacking on the town of Cullen remains uncertain times Roman Grant. Domain was a Muslim until the thirteenth century definitely going into Christian hands in 1233 after being conquered by Blasco de Alagon. In 1303 Guillem d'Anglesola sold culla and all its domains to the Order of the Temple by the amount of 500,000 salary. After being extinguished this order in 1307 in 1317 became part of the order of Our Lady of Montesa.
Culla Castle remained well preserved until the arrival of the Carlist which was virtually destroyed. Today there are only few significant remains of the walls of the castle, but the town still retains its old corners with medieval charm.
Route description: This route started from the pretty village located in the Maestrazgo Culla Castellón Carrascas land and Encinas. But before reaching Culla we visited the famous Carrasca Culla.

This spectacular oak tree designated as protected monuments and therefore is estimated to be older than 500 years. Its height of 23.34 meters, a crown diameter of 30 meters and its trunk has a height of 1.30 meters a perimeter of 6.24 meters.
is a pity but the pictures can not tell it to size (as always with these trees), but not deceived see it with your own eyes is formidable, as evidence if you look at the picture below I see my very very small with a yellow sign.

Culla We arrived and after a good carajillo we go to the route of today, for this indicator we Palette PR-225 which is what we will continue in full for this route.

The PR goes south to the football field. Culla We left on a paved road flanked by walls of stone embedded on both sides. This road will lead us to a bare hill where upon reaching the summit we descend due south along this road, the PR is well signposted and easy to follow.

During this trip we have a magnificent view of Peñagolosa

The PR takes us to a beautiful But now abandoned which meets pen functions, here the PR turn left, signposted by a paddle indicator. Also from here and up to the bed of the river course will have an almost constant downward.

The ongoing PR for a small forest path that leads towards the deep gorge where the river bed Montlleó. Finally begins to fill the rich environment encimares after principio.Este the bare hills of the oak and the oak is the forest primeval of these lands. And still the dominant tree in front of the pine, although not as abundant as in the past

Finally we reached the junction where the PR leaves the track to stay on track, but before we take the detour path to climb the
Peñacalva
For this we at this crossing the forest road to the right

Follow the track to the top downwards and soon we look out our goal, the impressive pile of stone called the Peñacalva.

I have to emphasize that during this trip we had our first match of the day with goats, abandoned near a corral where surprised and we could get close enough to throw them some pictures.

We made our way and soon we deviate from this track to take a right path that takes us to the Peñacalva. This trail is not marked or indicated or so highly recommended for this section have with a GPS.

This trail leads through a dense young oak, but the path is slightly mashed and is easy to lose sight of. It is important to take a west and try not to miss the track until we can spot where the rock cutting rushes to deep depression where the river bed.

Then you just have to get to the edge of this impressive cliff and get drunk with its magnificent views.

This beautiful photo shows the bed of the river to its mouth, as you can see in a moment begin a brutal decline to reach down there. At this time we are about 1000 meters and the river bed is about 430 meters!.

This photo shows the river to its source plying the deep gorge through which runs between vertical masses of stone. Get dizzy peering over this cliff!

After enjoying the magnificent view back on our heels to return to PR, by the way we turn to cross with the same herd of goats, but this time they are the ones that surprise us and not give me time focus the camera.

then begins a long and steady decline for a kind of channel that runs between two huge boulders, the Peñacalva right and its twin as impressive or more to the left.

This is possibly the most beautiful and interesting journey, the trail winds through this channel flanked by large oak trees, oaks and pines. Here we met with the herd of goats that had fallen from the slope of the Peñacalva and now we find them again. A group of about 7 or 8 individuals including one adult male.

The path turns right underneath the pile of stone called Peñacalva

This image left to walk a while my partner to take Ballast J. distance and can take a picture walking down the path and focusing on the Peñacalva background with all its rock wall, just you see!!

The path starts winding down a slippery quarry sharply below the Peñacalva that cross several times. Eye on this section because a slip can be dangerous.

We again see another group of goats this time about 5 young goats that surprise us down the quarry.

In this we see an interesting quarry vegetation grow here maples, junipers, oaks, oaks and large old juniper growing on the rock walls almost impossible to defy the law of gravity. Also discovered a large population of Cornicabra (Pistacea terebinthus), a large mastic and deciduous rare and what we believe is black Labiérnago (Phillyrea latifolea), also numerous and large size.

gradually descend to the river bed a few meters from the have this nice view of the valley formed by the groove is deep throat.

When you reach the river bed palette tells us we have to turn right and follow the bed of the river to its source.

Now The route runs for a while by the dry riverbed, the river carries water only after heavy rains in the fall or spring.

Walking along the river bed can enjoy the great overwhelmed with masses of stone that surround us.

We dropped a lot of height to get here and now enjoy from the bottom of the mountains through which we walked not long ago, the landscape is amazing.

The vegetation in the river bed is composed primarily of willows, Baladres and here we are a botanical oddity by these lands. Some small boxwoods growing on the rocky river bed.

The route follows the course of the river to the Peñacalva as shown in the picture below

The river crosses a forest road on several occasions, which we use to walk the earth and rest difficult step River quarry.

got to the point where we began the climb and leave the river with a paddle marked indicator that shows us the PR to Culla

The rise comes at a time when we are under the Peñacalva, as seen in photo below

This path is also very nice at first coincides with a forest track but then abandons her and follows a nice path between oaks.

Rusco Here are plentiful, this beautiful plant is listed as red fences vulnerable in our community.

As you can see this path is precious and not wasted. Large oak and juniper as the image are abundant.

When we realize we won and we can enjoy high ceilings and great views again, how are you beautiful hands that we are.

Just above we have Peñacalva impressive

The route turns right around this mass of stone showing all sides. This is particularly impressive.

Here the path back to a beautiful ravine covered with oak trees, oaks and pines

Once ascended the ravine, we are back in the highlands around Culla, we are very close now, in Masos of
Peñacalva
Masos In these places we are so abundant rain so we took it's time to take refuge in poultry feed and rest.

follow the PR and will soon have to Culla sight perched around his tooth.

Culla We arrived after almost 5 hours of walking, it is still early so we decided to climb the old Culla the trig point there at the top of his tooth.

Here are some pictures of the old town.

Slowly let the people down

to reach the trig point, we are at 1125 meters high, the highest point Today's route

And the views are magnificent, Peñagolosa

southwest

the northwest, with the bottom Ares del Maestre

And this, good ending to this wonderful route.
